If you have definitely got EITHER the Linux driver OR the Windows driver installed (via ndiswrapper), and if it's still not working, then you can look deeper at the button issue.

If there is still no network connection shown, then the drivers are either not installed or are not the correct drivers. If a connection is shown, then the drivers are fine and it should just be configuration.

(b) Once those are installed, you should be able to install the Windows driver via System->Administration->Windows Wireless Drivers. They can be intalled via System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager (in Synaptic, search for 'ndis'). These packages will allow you to install the Windows driver that came with your card. (This depends on ndiswrapper and ndis-utils so they should be installed automatically with ndisgtk). If there is, enable it and then check in Network Settings again to see if a wireless connection is shown. Check if there are any drivers listed there that need to be enabled.
